Description

UK MeetingDem National Conference- Tuesday, 21st March 2017

The University of Worcester Arena, Hylton Road, Worcester, WR2 5JN

The Meeting Centres Support Programme (MCSP) was developed following a community needs assessment in the Netherlands. There are now 142 Dutch centres with a national infrastructure that local groups can utilise to bring on new centres. Dutch research has demonstrated positive outcomes for people with dementia and for family carers. Typically a local Meeting Centre is offered 3 days per week supporting 12-17 participants per day in an easily accessible community location and is open to people of all ages and types of dementia. The focus of MCSP is on both the person living with dementia and their family. Evidence-based post-diagnostic psychosocial interventions are provided in a friendly manner geared up to the needs of the local members. It is facilitated by a small team of staff and volunteers trained in the ethos of person centred dementia care and the Adaptation-Coping Model.

Since 2013, we have been part of a JPND (EU Joint Programme for Neurodegenerative Diseases) research project MEETINGDEM with the aim of implementing and evaluating the Dutch Meeting Centres Support Programme (MCSP) model in UK, Italy and Poland and assessing what country specific adaptations were necessary. This has involved translating MCSP concepts and practicalities into a new country context and then assessing the benefits and cost effectiveness. Pilot Meeting Centres have been successfully implemented in all the countries in 2015 following a 12-month period of collaborative community engagement. This conference reports on the implementation, user feedback and effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of MCSP for the first time in the UK.

Aims:

  • To present the key findings for the first time in the UK from the 3-year JPND funded MeetingDem research Programme for the first time within the UK.

  • To reflect on how this evidence-based effective innovation for supporting people with dementia and their families could become part of the dementia care pathway in the UK.

It is expected that many delegates will already understand what a Meeting Centre Support Programme delivers for people living with dementia, families and localities. For those who do not, the main film on the MEETINGDEM webpage provides a good overview. This film (and others from Poland and Italy) will also be shown at the conference half an hour before formal proceedings commence.

Who should attend?

Anyone who is interested in community support of people and families affected by dementia. We are particularly keen to hear the views of those living with dementia and family carers. We will discuss how this innovation could impact on the dementia care post-diagnostic pathway; co-ordination of health and social care providers; Dementia Friendly Communities; Universities; Housing and workforce skills and competencies.
